What the estimate leaves out

  • Joint returns and head of household status. It assumes a single filer.
  • Itemized deductions, tax credits and the alternative minimum tax.
  • Exact state and provincial brackets. Regional tax uses one approximate rate.
  • Canada Pension Plan contributions on self-employed income.
  • Scottish income tax bands, which differ from the rest of the UK.
  • Lot-by-lot cost basis. You enter your gains and losses as totals.

Questions people ask before they file

Is this crypto tax calculator free?

Yes. There is no signup, no email and no paid tier. The calculator runs entirely in your browser.

How accurate is the estimate?

It uses the 2026 federal brackets for the US and Canada and HMRC's 2026/27 rates for the UK, with an approximate rate for each state or province. It assumes a single filer and does not know about your deductions, credits or individual purchase lots, so treat it as a planning number rather than a filed return.

Do you store the numbers I enter?

No. Every calculation happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved, and it is gone when you close the page. Google Analytics counts page visits but never sees your inputs.

Which crypto activities are taxable?

Selling, swapping and spending crypto are taxable disposals in the US, Canada and the UK. Crypto you receive from staking, mining, airdrops or work is income. Buying crypto with cash and moving it between your own wallets is not taxable.

What is the difference between short-term and long-term gains?

It only matters in the US. Crypto held one year or less is taxed at ordinary income rates of 10% to 37%; held longer, at 0%, 15% or 20%. Canada taxes half of any gain however long you held it, and the UK has no holding-period distinction.

Why is crypto I earned for work taxed more?

Because it carries payroll-style tax on top of income tax: 15.3% self-employment tax in the US and Class 4 National Insurance in the UK, both included in the estimate. Self-employed Canadians also pay CPP contributions, which the estimate leaves out.

Does the IRS know about my crypto?

Increasingly. US exchanges have sent Form 1099-DA to the IRS since 2025 transactions, with cost basis included from 2026. Canada and the UK are implementing the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, with platforms collecting data from January 1, 2026.

Estimates, not advice. TaxOnCrypto is an educational planning tool. Figures use 2026 federal rates (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32, CRA 2026 indexation, HMRC 2026/27) with a simplified regional layer.
