About TaxOnCrypto

A free, private crypto tax estimator and guide library for people in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. This page explains how the numbers are worked out.

Why it exists

Most crypto tax tools are either quick blog calculators that ignore half the rules, or paid software built around importing every transaction you have ever made. There was little in between: a fast, honest estimate that handles what people actually run into, such as staking rewards, crypto paid for work, self-employment tax, losses and quarterly payments.

The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored, and there is no account to create.

How the calculator works

The calculator estimates the tax caused by your crypto. It works out tax on all your income with the crypto included, then subtracts the tax on your other income alone, and shows the difference line by line. Everything assumes a single filer for the 2026 tax year.

United States

  • Federal brackets, the $16,100 standard deduction and the long-term capital gains thresholds (0% up to $49,450 of taxable income, 20% above $545,500): IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32.
  • Long-term gains are stacked on top of ordinary income, the same way the Schedule D tax worksheet does it.
  • Losses offset gains first. Up to $3,000 of a net loss reduces other income, and the rest is shown as a carryforward.
  • Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of crypto earned for work, with the 12.4% Social Security part capped at the 2026 wage base of $184,500 (IRC section 1401). Half of it is deducted from income.
  • Net investment income tax: 3.8% on gains above $200,000 of adjusted gross income (IRC section 1411).
  • State tax: one approximate rate per state applied to taxable income, and zero for the nine states without a broad income tax.
  • Crypto is property for federal tax purposes (IRS Notice 2014-21), and since 2025 cost basis is tracked wallet by wallet (Rev. Proc. 2024-28).

Canada

  • Federal brackets with the 14% lowest rate and the $16,452 basic personal amount: CRA 2026 indexation.
  • Half of a net capital gain is included in income (Income Tax Act, paragraph 38(a)). A net capital loss cannot reduce other income, so it is shown as a carryover.
  • Provincial and territorial tax: one approximate rate for each.
  • Treatment of crypto: the CRA's information for crypto-asset users.

United Kingdom

  • Income tax bands for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with the £12,570 personal allowance tapered away above £100,000.
  • Capital Gains Tax at 18% within the basic rate band and 24% above it, after the £3,000 annual exempt amount.
  • Class 4 National Insurance on self-employed crypto income: 6% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above.
  • Pooling and the same-day and 30-day rules: HMRC Cryptoassets Manual, CRYPTO22200.

What the estimate leaves out

  • Joint returns, head of household status and dependants. It assumes a single filer.
  • Itemized deductions, tax credits and the US alternative minimum tax.
  • Exact state and provincial brackets, local taxes and the Quebec federal abatement.
  • Canada Pension Plan contributions on self-employed income.
  • Scottish income tax bands.
  • Lot-by-lot cost basis. You enter gains and losses as totals, so the result is only as good as those totals.

How the guides are written

  • Primary sources. Rates, thresholds and rules come from the IRS, CRA and HMRC, and newer guides list their sources at the end.
  • Worked examples. Claims about how much tax applies are shown with numbers you can check.
  • Dated. Every guide shows when it was last updated and which tax year it covers.
  • Corrected in the open. When rates change or a reader reports an error, the affected guides are fixed and re-dated. In October 2026 several guides were corrected to show the 2026 federal brackets where earlier years' figures had been left in.

Who runs TaxOnCrypto

TaxOnCrypto is an independent project, built by crypto users who were tired of the gap between rough online calculators and expensive software. It is not affiliated with the IRS, the CRA, HMRC, any exchange or any tax software company, and no company pays to be mentioned in the guides. If the site ever carries ads or affiliate links, they will be clearly marked.
